About The Play
About The Play
Live Canon return to the Finborough Theatre, after the success of Committed and The Immortal Memory, with their unique blend of poetry and music. A selection of well known verse and undiscovered gems, Live Canon’s poetry performances are a fabulous way to hear, see and experience poetry. Every Live Canon production also features the world premiere of newly commissioned acapella musical settings of poetry.
The Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood was a controversial moment in the history of art and literature. They had four declarations: have genuine ideas to express; study Nature attentively, so as to know how to express them; sympathise with what is direct and serious and heartfelt in previous art, to the exclusion of what is conventional and self-parodying and learned by rote; and, most indispensable of all, produce thoroughly good stuff. Live Canon perform a selection of the poetry written by those associated with the movement, from Dante Rossetti’s romantic poetry to William Morris’ political diatribes; from Christina Rossetti’s contemplations on death to Swinburne’s musings on desire.
The performance also features two newly commissioned settings of William Morris’ poetry by Ireland’s leading contemporary composer, Jerome de Bromhead.
