About The Play
About The Play
The Finborough Theatre’s ongoing #VoicesFromUkraine season continues with a new release for Ukraine’s Independence Day from Olivier Award nominated producer, poet, composer and activist, Bréon Rydell, premiering FREE-TO-VIEW on the Finborough YouTube channel on Thursday, 24 August 2023 at 9.00am, and concurrently on Scenesaver with subtitles.
Freedom War is the second part of a trilogy of spoken word/films on the themes of democracy and universal freedom, following Stand Up For Ukraine which is also available on the Finborough Theatre’s YouTube channel.
Freedom War was inspired by the personal experiences of Gennadiy Kurochka, co-founder of the non-governmental Ukrainian Crises Media Center, and the author of a number of major national projects, including Rays of Dignity, Arch of Diversity and A Poppy Wreath. He is the first Ukrainian to receive the Cannes Lions Award for Witness.
In the midst of the 2014 Euromaidan protests, Gennadiy looked up through the haze at the Independence Monument, where at the top of the column, the Slavic Goddess and Protector of the Home, Berehynia, shone through like a light in the darkness. Gennadiy spent the whole two hundred and forty-two nights on Maidan Square, from the beginning to the end.
Freedom War is a beautiful and powerful tribute to all those who have sacrificed, and continue to risk their lives, in order to promote freedom, not just in Ukraine, but throughout the world.
Bréon Rydell is joined by Yuriy Sak, Advisor to The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence. Together, they recite Freedom War, which is part of a larger programme of public events, entitled Chains of Freedom, taking place in 2024.
